Summary (back of the book)
Haunted by memories of the Great War, failed academic Frank Nichols and his wife have arrived in the sleepy Georgia town of Whitbrow, where Frank hopes to write a history of his family’s old estate - the Savoyard Plantation - and the horrors that occured there. At first their new life seems to be everything they wanted. But under the facade of summer socials and small-town charm, there is an unspoken dread that the townsfolk have lived with for generations. A presence that demands sacrifice.
It comes from the shadowy woods across the river, where the ruins of the Savoyard Plantation still stand. Where a long-smoldering debt of blood has never been forgotten.
Where it has been waiting for Frank Nichols.
Review
Loved it. I thought this was a great book. Buehlman hits all the marks for scary - something that is ambiguous at first, and then becomes solidified in the reader’s eye. I did this book on audio and I found myself looking for moments in my day when I could get a little more listening done.
He does a wonderful job painting the picture of the time period and of Whitbrow. Setting and time period are very important to me. It was all around excellent. There were a few twists I wasn’t expecting, which is always fun. Also, great performance by the narrator!
If you like horror and want to read something set post WW1, this is the book for you! My husband, Dennis, recommended this to me (see graphic below). Now I’ve actually moved onto another series by Christopher Buehlman - so great to discover a new author!
