A Surprise in your Stocking

When I finally found out I was pregnant with Dominic, we had been trying for awhile.

It was a couple of days before Christmas. I remember laying on the couch just feeling unreasonably exhausted when it occured to me my period was a day or two late. I took a pregnancy test and it was positive.

After over a year of negative pregnancy tests I felt excited and overjoyed and maybe a little skeptical. So I filled the biggest water bottle in the house and drank it on the way to the pharmacy where I bought two more pregnancy tests.

By the time Dennis got home from work there were three positive pregnancy tests in his Christmas stocking. And that’s how I told him we were expecting a baby. I heard Dominic the Donkey on the radio three times on the short trip to the pharmacy and back, on multiple radio stations. So I took that as a sign we were going to have a boy, since that name was one we had decided on already.
